Context

When Nokia partnered with multinational mining company Vale, the ambition was bold: transform the mine into a living, breathing network.

The objective was not simply improved connectivity. It was to create a cognitive digital platform capable of collecting telemetry data from equipment, worker devices and sensors, feeding it into a real-time mesh network that enables better decision-making on site.

In mining environments, where operations are vast, constantly evolving and highly sensitive to downtime, misalignment between decisions and field reality can cost millions. Executive stakeholders needed to grasp not only what the technology does, but why it changes operational economics.

Challenges

Nokia’s Cognitive Digital Mine combines AI, machine learning and real-time network optimisation into one integrated system.

Yet traditional presentation formats struggled to communicate that systemic value. Screens and slides failed to convey:

    • The physical scale of a mining environment
    • The complexity of connectivity underground
    • The operational impact of real-time optimisation

The story risked remaining abstract. The intelligence remained invisible.

Nokia needed a way to make the network tangible, memorable and commercially compelling.

“The demo unlocked the value of our cognitive digital platform. It goes beyond attention, and showcases the value of our technology through interactive and immersive storytelling. Simply amazing”

Lelio Di Martino, General Manager at Nokia Cognitive Digital Mine

Our role

We created a hybrid storytelling environment designed to help enterprise stakeholders understand a complex system as a whole.

At its core, the experience combines a detailed mine replica with an interactive digital twin, allowing users to explore how the network operates in real conditions. Rather than explaining the system in abstract terms, it makes behaviour, dependencies and impact visible and intuitive.

Stakeholders do not just view the solution. They engage with it, explore scenarios and build a shared understanding of how it performs in practice.

Because the environment is modular, it can be adapted to different audiences or delivered fully digitally when needed.

Business impact

The platform enables executive stakeholders to understand how network intelligence changes operational decision-making.

Commercially, this enabled:

    • Stronger executive-level sales conversations
    • Reduced friction in explaining complex system interactions
    • Clearer articulation of operational optimisation benefits
    • A reusable asset supporting both global sales and internal training

Beyond sales, the platform became a learning environment for network engineers. Instead of reading about underground connectivity challenges, they can observe, test and build intuition in a simulated real-world setting.

The structural takeaway

In system-driven industrial markets, value is often embedded in layers of invisible intelligence.

When AI, IoT and operational optimisation operate beneath the surface, executive stakeholders need more than data points. They need structured, experiential clarity.

By merging a physical replica, a digital twin and real-time operational logic, we transformed a complex ecosystem into a decision environment.

When the invisible becomes tangible, strategic conversations move faster.
